Frequently asked questions
Does this tool upload my photo anywhere?
No. Everything — loading the photo, drawing the boxes, and rendering the final image — happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network panel, and choose a photo — you won't see a single upload request.
Which redaction style should I use?
Black out is the safest choice — it replaces the area with solid color, so there's nothing left to reconstruct. Pixelation and blur look softer but, especially at a light setting, can sometimes be partially reversed with the right tools. If what you're hiding is genuinely sensitive (a face, an ID number, a license plate), black out is the one to use.
Can it automatically detect faces for me?
Not yet — right now you draw each box by hand, which also means it works just as well for license plates, documents, screens, or anything else that isn't a face. Automatic face detection is on the roadmap.
Will this reduce my photo's quality?
The unredacted parts of the photo are copied pixel-for-pixel, so quality outside your boxes doesn't change. The file is re-saved as a PNG so the redaction itself stays crisp and isn't degraded by re-compression.
Which file types are supported?
JPEG, PNG, and WebP as input. The downloaded, redacted file is always saved as PNG.
